Reduce Fatigue
Nutrients connected to Reduce Fatigue
A link means the body needs the nutrient for this, or that low intake is linked to it. It does not mean extra supplements help if your intake is already adequate; each link shows how strong the evidence is.
- IronDeficiency link
Low iron over a long time can cause iron deficiency anaemia, which often shows as tiredness and low energy. Iron corrects tiredness that is caused by low iron; there is no good evidence in the sources we read that extra iron raises energy when iron levels are normal.
- Vitamin B12Deficiency link
Tiredness caused by B12 deficiency improves when the deficiency is treated. It is not shown to reduce tiredness in people with normal levels.
- Caffeine supplementsPreliminary or mixed
Caffeine can make people feel more awake, which may ease tiredness for a few hours. It does not replace sleep and is not a treatment for ongoing fatigue.
- RhodiolaPreliminary or mixed
Small studies suggest possible benefit for stress-related fatigue, but NCCIH says evidence is not enough to say rhodiola is useful, and the EU approval is traditional use only.
- EleutheroPreliminary or mixed
Registered in the EU for tiredness and weakness based on long use; two trials found no clear benefit overall, so evidence is weak.
- Asian ginsengPreliminary or mixed
A 2023 review found a small benefit for general fatigue; results are mixed and trials small.
- Vitamin B9 (folate and folic acid)Deficiency link
Extreme tiredness is a symptom of folate-deficiency anaemia, so correcting a deficiency can ease it. There is no good evidence that extra folate reduces tiredness in people who are not deficient.
- MagnesiumDeficiency link
Fatigue is a symptom of true magnesium deficiency, which is uncommon. Supplements are not shown to reduce fatigue in people who are not low.
- GlycinePreliminary or mixed
One small trial found less fatigue after three nights of shortened sleep; it does not show help for ongoing fatigue.
- JiaogulanPreliminary or mixed
One 12-week trial of a specific extract found less perceived fatigue than control in healthy adults.
