1. Is it an emergency?

Call your emergency number now (911 in the US) if the person:
  • has collapsed,
  • has a seizure,
  • has trouble breathing, or
  • cannot be woken. [1]

If the person is not breathing and not responding, start CPR; if they are unconscious but breathing, put them in the recovery position. [2]

2. Not an emergency yet? Call poison help

In the US, call 1-800-222-1222 or use the online web POISON CONTROL tool. Help is free, confidential and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. [1] Other countries: Poison help by country.

Do not wait for symptoms. Symptoms may take a few hours or days to start. [2]

3. Do not make the person vomit

Do not induce vomiting. Ipecac syrup is no longer recommended. [1] Do not give lemon juice, vinegar, charcoal or any other home remedy unless a poison expert or health professional tells you to. [3] Charcoal and other treatments are given in hospital when needed. [2]
