Pineapple Express is a cannabis cultivar (commonly called a strain) whose name is also shared with a film. This page keeps the name, the ancestry stories, laboratory data and research apart. It is information only. "Proper evidence not found" means we looked and found nothing usable; "reported" means a seller or writer said it and we could not verify it.

Identity, aliases and name conflicts

A seed-variety database lists seven seed-company entries under the name Pineapple Express,[1] and they do not describe the same plant. One Hawaiian seed company says the cultivar was created by an old-school Hawaiian breeder from Hawi on the Big Island, and says the breeder's uncle now calls it Hawaiian Shipwreck.[2] Another company says the name drew international attention after the well-known movie.[3] A content analysis of internet information sources found websites naming Pineapple Express as an example of a specific cultivar.[4] When you meet this name, assume it is a label, not a guarantee of one plant. See cultivar names, aliases and conflicts.

Reported lineage (disputed)

Three seed companies give three different answers:

  • Trainwreck crossed with Kona Gold, a Hawaiian sativa, after Trainwreck seeds turned up in a bag of cannabis on the Big Island.[2]
  • A fruity Jamaican variety called Pineapple crossed with OG Kush.[3]
  • A cross of a Skunk, a Hawaiian cannabis, and a ruderalis cannabis, sold as a separate version.[5]

All three are seller-side claims with no independent genetic record, so we mark the lineage as disputed and the breeder as unknown. See lineage claims and breeder attribution. Related profiles: Trainwreck and OG Kush.

Classification

Retail labels vary. One seed company lists the cultivar as mostly sativa,[2] another as mostly indica,[3] and user-review data from one large strain website labels it hybrid.[6] The same review data showed it among the ten most-reviewed strains in December 2023, with the fastest review growth of that group.[6] That is popularity, not chemistry.

A genetics study of 122 dispensary samples, from Colorado, California and Washington, took a 60 percent sativa figure for this name from an online database and noted that Pineapple Express and several other names with the same "60/40" label had different genetic makeup.[7] Five Pineapple Express samples had an average pairwise relatedness of 0.02, where 1.00 means identical clones and values near zero or below mean very little relatedness.[7][8] The paper's range across 30 names was from -0.22 to 0.68.[7] In plain terms, samples sold under this name were not close genetic copies of one another. See why labels do not predict effects.

Appearance

Seller descriptions vary by version, so no single appearance can be given. One company describes a single firm cola flecked with gold and reddish brown.[9] That describes that company's plant, not the cultivar in general.

Aroma and constituents

A Hawaiian seed company lists Kona Gold as having a honey scent cut with pineapple and sour lemon,[2] and another company calls the cultivar's aroma sweet and fruity.[9] These are seller descriptions. We did not find a readable measured terpene profile for this name, so we do not infer one from it. See terpene testing and profiles.

Potency

Verified batch data was not available. We checked peer-reviewed studies on Europe PMC and the seed-database pages above. Seller pages list descriptive terms, not tests with a sample ID, laboratory, date and method. Composition varies and there is no typical figure. Strength on any label can differ from a lab's result: one study of Colorado flower found measured THC averaged well below label values.[10] See how to read a cannabis COA.

Reported experiences

We do not reproduce seller or review-site effect descriptions because they vary by version and are not controlled research. Anecdotes cannot predict what any person will feel.

Research

Proper evidence not found. We searched Europe PMC for the name with cannabis and clinical terms. The results were market, content-analysis and genetics studies, not clinical trials of this cultivar.[6][4] For general cannabinoid evidence, see the clinical research overview, which does not validate this cultivar.

Safety

THC can impair thinking, memory and body movement, and anxiety or panic are more common when a product is strong.[11] See impairment and driving and when to seek urgent help.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pineapple Express a Hawaiian cultivar?

One Hawaiian seed company says so, but other companies give a Jamaican-OG Kush or a Skunk-Hawaiian-ruderalis background.[2][3][5]

Is the cultivar named after the movie?

Sources conflict. One company says the movie raised its profile,[3] and another says the strain made its way to Hollywood.[2] We could not verify the order of events.

Is it indica, sativa or hybrid?

Sellers say different things, and review data says hybrid.[2][3][6] Genetic testing found the common labels did not match genetic groups.[7]

How much THC does it have?

Verified batch data was not available, so we give no figure. Check the lab report for any product.
