Maui Wowie is a cannabis cultivar (commonly called a strain) linked to Hawaii. This page keeps the name, the history stories, laboratory data and research apart. It is information only. "Reported" means a seller or writer said it and we could not verify it; "Proper evidence not found" means we looked and found nothing usable. This is one of the thinner profiles in the library, because the sources we could read are mostly seller-side.
Identity, aliases and name conflicts
The name is also spelled Maui Waui; a seed-database entry lists the lineage tree as Maui Wowie leading to "Maui Waui Hawaii," probably a sativa.[1] Public DNA-sequence collections gathered by a database project include samples labeled Maui Waui and Hawaii Maui Waui,[2] but a sample label is not proof that a plant is a particular Hawaiian landrace. The name is also the title of a 2008 song that its encyclopedia entry describes as a tribute to a cannabis strain from Hawaii.[3] A seed-variety database lists four entries under the name from different seed companies.[4] Websites on medical cannabis have used Maui Wowie as an example of a specific cultivar.[5] See cultivar names, aliases and conflicts.
Reported lineage and breeder
We found no named breeder. Two seed companies make historical claims:
- A Hawaiian company says its plants come from genetics donated by a person from Lower Nahiku on Maui, described as "true Maui Wowie genetics" from the 1960s and 1970s.[1]
- A second company describes a classic Hawaiian sativa from the 1970s, with five phenotypes (plant variants) in its version.[6]
Both are seller-side descriptions. We looked for a peer-reviewed genetic study of Maui Wowie samples and found only sequence-collection labels, so there is no independent genetic record. We label the lineage "reported," the breeder "unknown," and the confidence low. See lineage claims and breeder attribution. A related profile is Pineapple Express, whose seller stories sometimes involve Hawaiian genetics.
Classification
Both seed companies call it a sativa.[1][6] That is a retail label, and genetic testing of dispensary samples found that the common sativa, indica and hybrid groupings did not match genetic groups.[7] Read what sativa means, compare how other names are handled in the cultivar directory, and see why labels do not predict effects.
Appearance
One company describes light green flowers with purple and orange hues and pink or red stigmas.[6] That describes its version of the plant. We make no general claim.
Aroma and constituents
The same company lists pineapple, solvent, pine, fruity and sweet aromas.[6] That is a seller description. We found no readable measured terpene profile, so we do not infer one. Read terpenes in cannabis.
Potency
Verified batch data was not available. We checked peer-reviewed studies on Europe PMC and the seed-database pages above. One company says its version has "high levels of THC," but gives no sample, laboratory, date or method,[6] so we do not treat it as a measurement. Composition varies and there is no typical figure. See total THC and total CBD and how to read a cannabis COA.
Reported experiences
Seller text calls it a sweet, upbeat tropical sativa.[1] That is marketing language, anecdote and not controlled research. It cannot predict how anyone will feel.
Research
Proper evidence not found. We searched Europe PMC for the name with clinical-trial terms and found only one article, a content analysis of websites that mentioned the name.[5] For general cannabinoid evidence see the clinical research overview, which does not validate this cultivar.
Safety
THC can impair thinking, memory and body movement, and anxiety or panic are more common when a product is strong.[8] Read impairment and driving and when to seek urgent help.
Frequently asked questions
Is Maui Wowie really from Maui?
Seller accounts say so and describe 1960s or 1970s Hawaiian genetics, but we found no independent record.[1][6]
Is Maui Wowie the same as Maui Waui?
They appear to be alternate spellings, as seed and DNA-sample databases use both.[1][2]
How much THC does it have?
Verified batch data was not available, so we give no figure. Check any product's lab report.
Is there research on Maui Wowie?
Proper evidence not found for health outcomes. Existing articles that mention it are about websites or databases.[5]
