Identity
Cannatonic is a retail and research cultivar name. The seed breeder Resin Seeds lists it as "Cannatonic (aka CBD Queen)". [1]The lineage is disputed, which makes this page different from most:
- Leafly says it is a cross of MK Ultra and G13 Haze. [2]
- A 2025 plant-science paper uses the same pairing but only as an assumption: the cultivar "is assumed to be" derived from that cross. [3]
- Resin Seeds, the breeder credited on the listing, now says the earlier MK Ultra by G13 account was an assumption and that the real genetics are Reina Madre and NYCD. [1]
I could not find an independent genetic study that settles the question. Treat any lineage statement as reported, and note that a breeder's correction is itself a claim on a seed listing. The breeder attribution to Resin Seeds is confidence reported. See lineage claims and breeder attribution and cultivar names, aliases and conflicts.
Classification
The retail label is hybrid (Leafly), and the breeder lists it as 50/50 indica and sativa. [2][1] Those labels are not measurements. A 2019 genetic study found no clear genetic support for sativa, indica and hybrid types among retail strains. [4]Cannabinoid dominance is where Cannatonic is distinctive, but sources differ. Leafly calls it mostly CBD. [2] Two research papers describe a "Cannatonic" line as CBD-dominant or high-CBD. [3][5] The breeder describes equal amounts of THC and CBD. [1] I recorded it as CBD-dominant per research, disputed by the breeder listing. A cultivar name does not guarantee composition, and a research plant is not a retail batch. See THC-dominant, CBD-dominant and mixed chemotypes.
Appearance
No readable source gave a usable, attributed description of the flower, so none is given.Aroma and constituents
Leafly describes a slightly earthy smell with a sweet citrus flavor. [2] This is a reported description. No readable batch-level terpene dataset was found, so no terpene percentages are given. See terpenes in cannabis.Potency
Composition varies, and verified batch data (batch, laboratory, test date, method) was not available. I checked the 2023 Colorado retail-flower study, the Nevada dataset, the Thai collection and the research papers named here. Those papers describe cannabinoid dominance in words and chart concentrations for research plants, but no retail-batch values suitable to quote. I did not read all supplementary tables. Breeder and retail listings state percentages; those are marketing figures, not independent lab results, and are not repeated. See CBD vs CBDA on a label.Reported experiences
These are anecdotes, not research. Leafly describes a short-lived, mellow, uplifting and relaxing experience and says patients choose it for pain, muscle spasms, anxiety and migraines. [2] Those are statements about what people choose and report, not evidence of benefit.Research
Evidence label: preclinical and plant science, no human outcome studies found. The research uses Cannatonic as a CBD-rich model plant. One study compared how different light schedules changed yield and CBD concentration in Cannatonic, Northern Lights and Hindu Kush plants. [5] Another compared Cannatonic with a THC-dominant line for nutrient use and gene activity. [3] These are plant studies, not studies of effects in people. Proper evidence not found for health outcomes of this cultivar. Do not transfer findings for approved CBD medicines or CBD to flower or products sold under this name. Evidence labels on this page: insufficient evidence means studies exist but are too few or too weak to judge; preclinical means cells or animals only; "Proper evidence not found" means I looked and found nothing usable.Safety
The breeder lists THC and CBD in equal amounts, so a CBD-rich reputation does not mean THC-free. [1] Medicine interactions are covered on CBD and medication interactions. The risks of THC-containing cannabis are covered on impairment and driving. Anyone pregnant, breastfeeding or taking prescription medicines should read the linked safety pages and talk with a clinician. In the US, Poison Help is 1-800-222-1222; call 911 for emergencies. This is education, not medical or legal advice.Frequently asked questions
Is Cannatonic a CBD strain?
Research papers and Leafly describe it as CBD-rich, but the breeder listing describes equal THC and CBD. Composition varies by plant and product. [2][3][1]
What are Cannatonic's parents?
That is disputed. MK Ultra and G13 Haze is the long-reported cross, but the breeder now names Reina Madre and NYCD. [2][1]
Does Cannatonic treat pain, anxiety or migraines?
Proper evidence not found. Leafly says patients choose it for those problems, but that is a statement about choices, not a trial result. [2]
Why do scientists study Cannatonic?
Plant researchers have used it as a CBD-rich example for studies of light, nutrients and gene activity. [5][3]
