CBD vs CBDA on a Label
How CBD and CBDA appear as separate numbers on hemp and CBD lab reports, how total CBD is calculated, and why the acid form is not the same as CBD, explained for reading only.

The short version
CBD (cannabidiol) has an acid precursor, CBDA (cannabidiolic acid), much as THC has THCA. A lab report may list CBD and CBDA in separate rows, and a label may show only one of them or a calculated total. This page helps you read those numbers. It does not recommend any product or amount. For what CBD itself is and what research shows, see the CBD guide. How the two forms relate
Removing the carboxylic acid portion of a cannabinoid is called decarboxylation, and heating converts delta-9 THCA into delta-9 THC. [1] The same page applies the same calculation logic to CBDA, which is why reports list CBD and CBDA as separate rows. [1] Specific research on CBDA is on the CBDA page, and the chemistry is in decarboxylation explained.Total CBD
The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension gives the total CBD calculation as % Total CBD = % CBD + (% CBDA x 0.877). [1] The 0.877 correction takes into account the extra weight of the carboxylic acid group. [1] A total CBD line therefore assumes the acid converts completely. It is a calculated figure, not a separate measurement. More on this in total THC and total CBD.Whether a US law or regulator applies the 0.877 factor to CBD I did not verify. The US hemp rule I read defines total THC, not total CBD. [2]
Reading the rows
| What you see | What it is | Common confusion |
|---|---|---|
| CBD | The neutral form | A small CBD row can sit next to a large CBDA row, so read both |
| CBDA | The acid precursor | It is not the same compound, and label claims about CBD should say which form they mean |
| Total CBD | A calculated sum | Depends on the formula and assumes full conversion |
| ND or below a limit | Not detected or not reliably measurable | See limits of detection and quantification |
Why the method matters
A gas chromatograph heats the sample, so its result does not include the acid forms and represents total cannabinoid content. [1] Liquid chromatography can report acid and neutral forms separately. Methods have different strengths, and a review of cannabinoid analysis found each has inherent limitations. [3] Reports from different labs may therefore not match row for row. What this does and does not tell you
A CBD or CBDA number describes how much of a compound a lab measured in a sample. It does not show that a product works for any condition. Prescription cannabinoid medicines are separate from consumer products, as explained in cannabis medicines vs consumer products. Product labels may also be inaccurate: a US study found labeled and observed THC often differed in retail cannabis, and the same cautions about label accuracy apply when reading any cannabinoid number. [4]Frequently asked questions
Is CBDA the same as CBD?
No. CBDA is the acid form and CBD is the neutral form. Reports list them in separate rows and combine them with the total CBD formula. [1]
How is total CBD calculated?
A common published formula is % Total CBD = % CBD + (% CBDA x 0.877). [1]
Why does my report show a small CBD number and a large CBDA number?
Methods differ. The University of Georgia explains that a gas chromatograph result does not include the acid forms and represents total cannabinoid content, while the summation formula is used for the other method. [1]
Does CBDA have proven benefits?
Proper evidence not found on this page; see the CBDA page for what research exists.
