Identity
Zkittlez is a retail cultivar name (often called a strain). Leafly lists it under the title "The Original Z" with the alias "Z", and says the cultivar is popularly known under a candy-related name. It reports that in 2023 the breeders announced they would use "The Original Z" as part of a settlement with a candy company over alleged trademark infringement. [1] That is Leafly's account; I did not read the legal record. In practice the same plant, copies and unrelated products may all be sold as "Zkittlez" or "Z".Reported breeder attribution, confidence reported: Leafly names an individual nicknamed Gas Station Bob as the source and says the Terp Hogz growers and 3rd Gen Family popularized it and are still refining it. [1] Reported lineage: an alleged mix of Grape Ape and Grapefruit crossed with another undisclosed strain. [1] Two seed listings repeat the Grape Ape and Grapefruit pairing, one adding an unnamed indica line. [2][3] Those listings are not independent confirmation, since they describe the same claim. No genetic study of the lineage was found. See lineage claims and breeder attribution.
Classification
The retail label is indica (Leafly) or "mostly indica" and "80% indica" in seed listings. [1][2][3] These percentages describe a seller's classification, not a chemical measurement. A 2019 genetic study of retail cannabis found no clear genetic support for the commonly used sativa, indica and hybrid types. [4] Cannabinoid dominance is unknown: no readable source gave measured cannabinoids for this cultivar. See why labels do not predict effects.Appearance
Leafly describes medium-sized, spongy green colas. [1] A seed listing mentions colors from light green to pink and purple. [3] Both are reported descriptions.Aroma and constituents
Leafly describes a sweet, tropical, candy-like fruit flavor. [1] This is a reported description. No readable, batch-level terpene dataset was found, so no terpene percentages are given and none should be inferred from the name. See terpenes in cannabis.Potency
Composition varies, and verified batch data (batch, laboratory, test date, method) was not available. I checked a 2023 Colorado retail-flower study, a Nevada chemical dataset of 2,662 samples, a 2026 Thai collection of 36 varieties, and seed-listing pages. None gave measured cannabinoids for Zkittlez. [5][6][7] Seed listings state their own percentage ranges, which differ from one another. Those are marketing figures, not independent laboratory findings, so they are not repeated. See how to read a cannabis COA.Reported experiences
These are anecdotes, not research. Leafly describes calming effects that leave consumers focused, alert and happy. [1] Individual experiences vary with the product, the amount and the person, and this description does not predict yours.Research
Evidence label: preclinical (cells/animals only), and not about the commercial cultivar. One 2025 study gave rats oils made from two plant varieties, one called "Alfajor Zkittlez," in an experimental model of fatty liver. [8] It was an animal study, the plants were grown by a company in Argentina, and I could not confirm they match the Zkittlez described above. It cannot be applied to people. Proper evidence not found for human outcomes. Findings for THC or CBD do not validate a cultivar name. Evidence labels on this page: insufficient evidence means studies exist but are too few or too weak to judge; preclinical means cells or animals only; "Proper evidence not found" means I looked and found nothing usable.Safety
Products sold under one name can differ, so a familiar name is not a guide to strength. [4] The risks of THC-containing cannabis are covered on impairment and driving and anxiety, panic and paranoia. For an accidental ingestion by a child or pet, US Poison Help is 1-800-222-1222 and 911 is for emergencies. See accidental child and pet exposure. This is education, not medical or legal advice.Frequently asked questions
Why is Zkittlez sometimes called The Original Z?
Leafly says the breeders adopted the name in 2023 as part of a settlement over alleged trademark infringement. I did not read the legal record. [1]
What is Zkittlez crossed from?
The reported parents are Grape Ape and Grapefruit plus an undisclosed strain. This is reported lineage, not tested. [1][2]
What is the THC percentage of Zkittlez?
It varies, and no verified batch data was found. A listing percentage is a marketing figure, not a laboratory result for the strain.
Has Zkittlez been studied?
Only in an animal study using a variety called Alfajor Zkittlez; it cannot be applied to people. Proper evidence not found for human outcomes. [8]
