Wedding Cake is a cannabis cultivar (commonly called a strain) that became one of the most talked-about names of the last decade. This page separates the name, the competing ancestry stories, measured lab data and research. It is information only. "Insufficient evidence" below means a finding rests on very little; "Proper evidence not found" means we looked and found nothing usable.

Identity, aliases and name conflicts

A seed-database entry says the cultivar was created by Seed Junky Genetics, a breeder attribution we mark as reported, and lists it as Wedding Cake, also called Pink Cookies and Triangle Mints #23.[1] That same page says it has "unconfirmed genetic origins" and that the breeder's original is no longer sold as seed, so it is impossible to know how seeds sold by other companies compare with it.[1] The same database lists about 20 entries under the Wedding Cake name.[1]

A Denver newspaper noted that the pink and purple look of the flowers led some people to call it Pink Cookies.[2] In Canada the name Pink Cookies is also used.[1] Whether the two names mean exactly the same plant is not settled. See cultivar names, aliases and conflicts.

Reported lineage

Three accounts circulate, all reported, none verified here:

  • A cross of Cherry Pie and Girl Scout Cookies, which an editorial profile calls the widely known version.[3]
  • A Triangle Kush mother and an Animal Mints male, which the same profile says is the account given by Seed Junky Genetics, described as the reputed breeders.[3]
  • A phenotype of Triangle Mints, which the seed database also lists as a claim.[1]

A reviewer for a Baltimore publication summed it up as a "meandering maze of wonky weed hybrids, sweet cookie crosses, and word of mouth."[4] We treat the breeder attribution as reported (not verified) and the lineage as disputed. See lineage claims and breeder attribution. Related profiles: Girl Scout Cookies and Gelato.

Classification

Retail labels disagree. One editorial profile calls Wedding Cake hybrid-dominant,[3] while the seed database page calls it an indica-dominant hybrid.[1] A Thai laboratory study that analyzed aroma compounds in dried flower listed its Wedding Cake sample under the heading "C. indica" and noted that all strain names in the study are commercial names.[5] In user reviews on one large strain website, Wedding Cake was the most-reviewed strain each year from 2020 to 2023,[6] which shows popularity, not composition. Names and market categories do not guarantee chemistry or effects; see why labels do not predict effects.

Appearance

An editorial profile describes thick, frosty flowers with purple accents and orange hairs.[3] Appearance depends on the plant, handling and drying, so this is a general description only.

Aroma and constituents

Seed Junky Genetics, as quoted by an editorial profile, says the name came from a vanilla cake frosting aroma.[3] The seed-database entry describes a sweet, pastry-like aroma.[1] Both are breeder-side descriptions.

Measured terpene data: we found a Thai study that profiled a Wedding Cake sample among 19 dried flower samples,[5] but we did not find a figure for it that we could read and cite. We do not infer terpene levels from the name. An editorial site that averages unnamed lab results shows numbers for this name, but those are blended and cannot be tied to any batch, so we do not repeat them. The site itself notes that anyone can call a plant anything.[3] For background, see terpenes in cannabis.

Potency

Verified batch data was not available. We checked peer-reviewed studies on Europe PMC and the editorial and seed-database pages above. None gave a Wedding Cake result with a sample ID, laboratory, test date, method and units. Composition varies from product to product; there is no typical figure. To read any label or certificate you encounter, see how to read a cannabis COA.

Reported experiences

A reviewer for a Baltimore publication described a fast, pleasant, slightly trippy high.[4] An editorial profile calls it a potent, euphoric, relaxing cultivar.[3] These are individual and editorial impressions: anecdote, not controlled research, and not a promise of how anyone will feel.

Research

Proper evidence not found. We searched Europe PMC for the name together with cannabis and trial terms and found no clinical study of this cultivar. For what systematic reviews say about cannabinoids in general, see the clinical research overview; it does not validate this cultivar.

Safety

THC can impair thinking, memory and body movement, and anxiety or panic are more common when a product is strong.[7] Strength is hard to judge from a name. Read cannabis impairment and driving and when to seek urgent help after cannabis.

Frequently asked questions

What is Wedding Cake made from?

It depends on which account you read. Cherry Pie with Girl Scout Cookies and Triangle Kush with Animal Mints are both reported, and none is verified.[3][1]

Is Wedding Cake the same as Pink Cookies?

Some sources use the names interchangeably,[1] but sources also say they may not be identical.[3]

How strong is Wedding Cake?

Verified batch data was not available, so we give no figure. Strength varies by product, and label values can differ from laboratory measurements in other studies.[8]

Is it an indica or a hybrid?

Sources disagree.[3][1] The label is a retail habit, not a measurement.
