Delta-10 THC: What It Is and What Is Known

What delta-10 THC is called, what little research exists on it, what poison center and mouse data show, and why its legal and safety status is unclear.

Short answer

Delta-10 THC (Δ10-THC) is a THC-type compound sold in some vapes, gummies and other products. Very little has been published about it. NIDA lists delta-10-THC among intoxicating cannabinoids and related compounds with limited research on health effects. [1] This guide uses plain evidence labels: preclinical (cells/animals only), insufficient evidence, evidence of harm and marketing claim. "Proper evidence not found" means we looked and found nothing usable.

What it is

Delta-10 THC is one of several isomers of THC, meaning compounds with the same atoms arranged slightly differently. A 2024 laboratory study of CB1 receptor activity grouped delta-7 and delta-10 THC as THC isomers and found differences in activity between stereoisomers, which are different three-dimensional arrangements of the same atoms. [2] That is why the exact form in a product matters, and why one product cannot stand in for another.

Researchers have proposed the umbrella term "derived psychoactive cannabis products" for delta-8, delta-10, HHC, THC-O, THCP and THCV products, because the older words "hemp" or "legal" blur what is actually in them. [3]

Where it comes from

Proper evidence not found on how much delta-10 THC the plant makes naturally. We checked PubMed and the regulator pages we could read, and found no source measuring natural amounts. For delta-8 THC, the FDA says concentrated amounts are typically manufactured from hemp-derived CBD rather than taken from the plant. [4] We did not find a regulator statement doing the same for delta-10, so we do not assume it. This page does not describe any conversion method. See natural, semisynthetic and synthetic cannabinoids.

What research shows

  • Human studies. Proper evidence not found. We searched PubMed for delta-10 THC and found no human trial of benefit, and no controlled human study of its effects in the sources read.
  • Animal data. In a 2024 study in mice trained to recognize delta-9 THC, delta-10 THC (the 6aR,9R form) partly substituted for it, while delta-8 THC fully did. [5] That suggests some THC-like effect in mice. Label: preclinical (cells/animals only). It does not tell us how strong the effect is in people.
  • Medical claims. Any claim that delta-10 is "uplifting", "energizing" or helpful for a condition is a marketing claim unless a human trial is cited. We found none.

Risks and reports

  • Poison centers. US poison centers received 5,022 cases from 2021 to 2022 where the main substance was delta-8, delta-10 or THC-O acetate; 98.1% involved delta-8, so delta-10 was a small share. [6] The study did not separate out delta-10 outcomes in the abstract, and the authors note the surveillance system is passive. [6] Proper evidence not found for delta-10-specific harm rates.
  • Vaping. A 2026 review says newer THC isomers in vapes pose health risks to youth because they are currently unregulated and not well researched. [7] See vape liquids and cartridges.
  • Special groups. Children, pregnant or breastfeeding people, and anyone with a history of psychosis or heart disease should treat any THC-type product with caution and ask a clinician. Proper evidence not found for delta-10-specific safety in these groups. Related guides: cannabis adverse effects and pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Drug tests

A 2023 laboratory study tested six urine screening kits and found that current screening methods may be able to detect delta-10 THC and related analogs. [8] See cannabis and drug testing.

Legal status

This is not legal advice; laws change. Read on 2026-10-22:
  • United States, federal. The DEA's 2020 interim final rule says synthetically derived tetrahydrocannabinols remain Schedule I. [9] A November 2025 law changing the federal hemp definition is due to take effect on November 12, 2026, and excludes hemp products with cannabinoids made outside the plant. [10] We did not read any regulator page that names delta-10 specifically, so we do not state its status.
  • Elsewhere. Not verified. See cannabis laws by country.

How to judge a delta-10 product

Ask what human evidence is cited, whether the label names the exact isomer, and whether a batch-specific lab report exists. A lab report shows content, not safety or benefit. See how to read a cannabis COA.

Frequently asked questions

What is delta-10 THC?

A THC isomer sold in some consumer products, with very little published research. NIDA lists it among compounds with limited research. [1]

Is delta-10 THC intoxicating?

In one mouse study, it partly substituted for delta-9 THC, which suggests a THC-like effect in mice. [5] Human data: proper evidence not found.

Is delta-10 THC safe?

Safety has not been established. Poison centers have recorded exposures in a group that included delta-10 products. [6]

Is delta-10 THC natural?

Proper evidence not found on natural amounts. See the section on where it comes from.
