Help first
If cannabis use feels hard to control, help exists. In the US, NIDA lists the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357) for treatment referrals, and says anyone in a substance use or mental health crisis can call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. [1] For severe symptoms, NIDA says to call 911. [1] See substance use support and urgent help. How to read this page
This page is education, not medical advice, and it does not tell anyone to stop or change use or medicines. Evidence labels: established, mixed, insufficient evidence, evidence of harm (an association in studies). For the wider list of cannabis harms, see cannabis adverse effects and use disorder.Dependence
"Dependence" in everyday speech usually means the body or habits have adapted to regular use. The medical diagnosis is cannabis use disorder, a type of substance use disorder. NIDA says studies estimate that 22% to 30% of people who use cannabis have it, and that how often someone uses is the strongest predictor. [1] Higher THC concentrations have been associated with a greater likelihood of use progressing to the disorder. [1]The DSM-5, the reference manual clinicians use, defines the disorder as a pattern of use causing clinically significant impairment or distress, with two or more of 11 listed symptoms within 12 months. Examples include using more than intended, failed attempts to cut down, craving, continuing despite problems at work, school or home, tolerance, and withdrawal. [1] Two or three symptoms is mild, four or five moderate, and six or more severe. [1]
NIDA also says that using cannabis at a younger age increases the likelihood of developing the disorder later in life. [1] Label: evidence of harm (association).
Withdrawal
NIDA says a person may have withdrawal symptoms after stopping or greatly reducing heavy or long-term use, even without cannabis use disorder. Listed symptoms include anger, irritability, aggression, nervousness or anxiety, restlessness, decreased appetite or weight, depression, insomnia, strange or unsettling dreams, headaches, sweating, abdominal pain and tremor. [1]How common is it? It depends on who is studied:
| Group studied | Estimated share with withdrawal | Source |
|---|---|---|
| All regular or dependent users pooled (47 studies, 23,518 people) | 47% | [2] |
| Population-based samples | 17% | [2] |
| Outpatient samples | 54% | [2] |
| Inpatient samples | 87% | [2] |
| People who frequently use cannabis (one study cited by NIDA) | 12.1% | [1] |
The 2020 meta-analysis also found withdrawal was more common where daily use, tobacco use or other substance use disorders were present. [2] The numbers differ widely because the studies measure different people and use different tools. They show that withdrawal is real and common among heavy users, not what any one person will feel. Label: established that withdrawal occurs; prevalence estimates vary widely.
Proper evidence not found: a reliable timeline (how many days symptoms last) was not confirmed in the sources read for this page (NIDA, the JAMA Network Open meta-analysis abstract and the Cochrane review abstract), so none is given here.
Treatment research
NIDA says behavioral treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational enhancement therapy and contingency management can be effective for cannabis use disorder. It adds that there are no FDA-approved medicines for the disorder or for medically assisted withdrawal. [1] A 2025 Cochrane review of 37 randomized trials (3,201 participants) found that THC preparations and N-acetylcysteine did not produce more abstinence than placebo, and concluded that the medicines studied should still be considered experimental. [3] Label: effective per NIDA for behavioral treatment; insufficient evidence for medicines.A clinician or the helpline above can help build a plan. People who take other medicines or have mental health conditions should involve their prescriber. See also anxiety, panic and paranoia reactions.
What about CBD?
The approved CBD medicine's label says CBD is not a controlled substance in the US. [4] It also reports that in animal studies CBD did not produce self-administration, and that in a human abuse potential study, CBD responses on "drug liking" measures stayed within the acceptable placebo range, unlike dronabinol (synthetic THC) and alprazolam. [4] That describes the approved medicine in a study, not consumer products that may also contain THC.Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between dependence and cannabis use disorder?
"Dependence" is a common word; cannabis use disorder is the diagnosis, defined by symptoms in a 12-month period. [1]
How common is cannabis use disorder?
NIDA cites studies estimating 22% to 30% of people who use cannabis. [1]
Does cannabis withdrawal really happen?
Yes. A meta-analysis of 47 studies estimated 47% of regular or dependent users, from 17% in population samples to 87% in inpatient samples. [2]
Is there a medicine for cannabis withdrawal or use disorder?
NIDA says none is FDA-approved, and a 2025 Cochrane review calls the medicines studied experimental. [1][3]
Where can I find help in the US?
SAMHSA National Helpline 1-800-662-HELP (4357); call or text 988 in a crisis. [1]
