Quick answer

Amnesia Haze is a cultivar name (commonly called a strain) tied to Amsterdam and to the seed company Soma Seeds. Unusually, its breeder has given a first-person account of how it was selected, which adds to the usual online lineage list. Even so, no source we read gives verified batch data. This page is information only, not medical or legal advice.

Identity and names

Several different "Amnesia" names circulate. One 2022 analytical study, using plants from a Spanish grow shop's own seeds, lists four separate types: Amnesia Haze, Amnesia Hy-Pro, Original Amnesia and Y Griega, each with a different described parentage.[1] So "Amnesia" on a label does not identify which one is meant. Amnesia Haze is also abbreviated AMNH in one metabolomics paper.[2]

Reported lineage and breeder claims

  • Online version (reported). A common description says Amnesia Haze comes from Jamaican sativa, South Asian indica and Afghani-Hawaiian stock.[3] An encyclopedia says its genetics trace to South Asian and Jamaican landraces.[4] The 2022 study describes it as a cross of a staple Haze with several worldwide landraces, including Thai, Hawaiian and Afghani.[1]
  • Breeder's own account (reported, one source). In a 2025 magazine interview, the founder of Soma Seeds said Afghani-Hawaiian was a line he brought from America, that he received clones of Neville's Hazes from a fellow breeder, and that he also grew Super Silver Haze.[3] He said the selection took two or three years of trying combinations of Afghani-Hawaiian with Super Silver Haze types, and that the name came from forgetting what they were doing while sampling it.[3]
  • Awards (reported). A short encyclopedic entry on the company says Amnesia Haze won a 2004 cannabis cup in the best-strain category,[5] and Leafly lists first place in 2004 and in a Sativa Cup in 2012.[4] Contest wins are not evidence of composition.
  • Genetic evidence. We found no genetic study that tests Amnesia Haze's parents.

Confidence: moderate for breeder (Soma Seeds) and place (Amsterdam), low for the exact parent lines.

Classification

Retail labeling is sativa or sativa-dominant.[4][3] Percent claims conflict: the 2022 study describes it as 70% sativa,[1] while a 2024 study describes seeds from a South African vendor as 80% sativa and 20% indica.[2] Neither number is a chemical measurement. The 2024 paper treats its Amnesia Haze plants as a type I chemovar, the group characterized by high THC.[2] See why labels do not predict effects and THC-dominant, CBD-dominant and mixed chemotypes.

Aroma

Reported flavors are earthy, citrus, lemon and lime.[4] A 2024 Thai study included a sample sold as Amnesia Haze among 19 dried flowers profiled for scent compounds, but the text we read gives no cultivar-level values.[6]

Terpenes and potency

Verified batch data was not available. The encyclopedia lists myrcene, caryophyllene and limonene as leading terpenes and a headline THC figure, with no batch, laboratory, date or method, so we show no numbers.[4] Composition varies by batch. Reported experiences (anecdote)

A marketplace summary of reader reports lists giggly, euphoric and talkative as top effects.[4] A magazine article repeats that it is described as energetic and long-lasting.[3] These are self-reports, not controlled research and not guaranteed effects.

Research

Proper evidence not found for clinical research on Amnesia Haze. Two laboratory studies used the name:
  • Raman microscopy (2022). Researchers compared the spectra of trichomes from five marijuana types, four of them "Amnesia" types, and could tell the types apart.[1] This is an analytical method study, not a health study.
  • Metabolomics (2024). Leaf and flower extracts of Amnesia Haze and a second cultivar were profiled by mass spectrometry; the cultivars differed in overall chemistry across plant parts.[2]

Neither study tests effects in people. General pages such as THC do not validate claims about this name.

Safety

Cannabis can impair thinking, memory and body movement, and anxiety, fear or panic is more common with strong products or little experience.[7] The magazine article itself says the name reflects reported forgetfulness among users.[3] See impairment and driving and anxiety, panic and paranoia. Frequently asked questions

Who created Amnesia Haze?

Soma Seeds in Amsterdam is credited, and its founder describes the selection in a magazine interview.[3]

Is Amnesia Haze a sativa?

It is labeled sativa or sativa-dominant in the sources we read.[4] Sources disagree on percentages.[1][2]

Is Amnesia Haze the same as Original Amnesia?

No. A 2022 study lists them as separate types with different described parentage.[1]

What is the THC percentage of Amnesia Haze?

We could not establish a verified figure. Composition varies by batch, so check the certificate of analysis on the actual product.
