Urgent first
- Call 911 for trouble breathing, a swollen throat, tongue or lips, a seizure, collapse, or a person who cannot be woken. Poison Control says any allergic reaction that includes difficulty breathing should be treated as a medical emergency. [1] The NHS (UK) lists swelling of the throat and tongue and difficulty breathing among the signs of anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction. [2]
- Call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 (US) if anyone has swallowed an essential oil or a product containing one. Poison Control says expert guidance is free, confidential and available 24 hours a day. [1] For other countries see Poison Help by country.
- Chemical in the eye: MedlinePlus lists any chemical getting into the eye as a reason to seek emergency medical care. [3]
- If someone has swallowed an oil on purpose, or is thinking about self-harm, call 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, US).
The short answer
Poison Control states that misuse of essential oils can cause serious poisoning. [1] Some problems start within minutes. Poison Control says seizures from swallowed camphor can begin within a few minutes. [1] Others, such as a skin rash, are common and usually less urgent. This page sorts the warning signs; it is not a diagnosis. A pharmacist, clinician or poison center decides what a particular person needs. Why swallowing and small children are treated seriously
Poison Control says children have thin skin and immature livers, which might make them more susceptible to toxic effects than adults. [1] The National Cancer Institute says swallowing large amounts of essential oils is not recommended. [5] Camphor, wintergreen and eucalyptus have specific warnings: Poison Control says even a small amount of camphor is dangerous if swallowed, and that wintergreen oil is very dangerous if more than a tiny amount is swallowed. [1] See what to do first after poisoning and what poison centers say about swallowing.Have the product with you
The NHS (UK) advises taking the container along after a strong chemical gets in the eye, because the information on it may help treatment. [6] The same idea is sensible for any exposure: have the bottle, the label and the botanical name ready when speaking to Poison Help or a clinician. See what to tell Poison Help when you call.Later or less urgent problems
- A rash that does not clear, keeps coming back, or follows repeated use: see a clinician or pharmacist. See skin reactions and sensitization.
- Headache, nausea or dizziness linked to a strong scent: one aromatherapy association describes headaches, vertigo, nausea and lethargy as possible after prolonged exposure to high levels of vapor. [7]
- Anyone taking blood thinners or other regular medicines should ask the prescriber or pharmacist before using oil-containing rubs. See liver, kidney and medicine cautions.
- Before surgery, tell the surgical team about any oils or rubs in regular use.

Frequently asked questions
Should I make someone vomit after they swallow an essential oil?
Do not decide this yourself. Call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 and follow their instructions. Poison Control says aspirating an oil can cause pneumonia if it enters the lungs. [1]
Is a skin rash an emergency?
A rash alone is usually not, but a rash with trouble breathing or swelling of the throat or tongue is. [1] [2]
What if a child just licked a little oil?
Call Poison Help. Poison Control says even a small amount of camphor is dangerous if swallowed, and that expert guidance is available around the clock. [1]
Do I need to bring the bottle?
Bringing the container is useful. The NHS advises taking the container after a strong chemical gets in the eye. [6]
Who do I call outside the US?
See Poison Help by country. We state only US numbers here.
